From FoxSports:
Iceland (AP) - Andres Iniesta's late equalizer gave 10-man Spain a 1-1 draw with Iceland in European Championship qualifying Saturday. The FC Barcelona midfielder pounced on a loose ball in the area, shooting it past goalkeeper Arni Arason in the 86th minute to salvage a point for Spain. Emil Hallfredsson's header in the 40th had given Iceland a surprise lead.

The draw gives Spain 16 points from eight games, moving it into a tie with Northern Ireland - which fell 1-0 to Latvia Saturday - for second in Group F. Sweden leads with 19 points.

Iceland has five points from eight games.

Spain went a man down inside 19 minutes, when Xabi Alonso was sent off after coming down on Arnar Vidarsson with his knee as the two tangled.

Gunnar Heidar Thorvaldsson missed a chance to put Iceland ahead two minutes later, his low shot going just wide.

Arason denied Fernando Torres in the 36th, getting a fingertip to the Liverpool striker's low drive from the edge of the area to tip it beyond the post.

Hallfredsson snuck behind defender Sergio Ramos to meet Gunnar Heidar Thorvaldsson's long cross from the right for the host's goal.

With the pouring rain letting up some after Halfredsson's goal, Spain striker David Villa thought he had tied it in the 44th but was whistled offside.

Lineups:

Spain: Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Carlos Marchena, Juanito, Mariano Pernia (David Albelda, 26), Xavi Hernandez, Xabi Alonso, David Silva, Joaquin Sanchez (Luis Garcia, 69), David Villa, Fernando Torres (Andres Iniesta, 57).

UEFA Nations league Serbia 2-0 Switzerland - Highlights and news 13.10.2024

Serbia drove through Nico Elvedi's own objective in first-half stoppage time and Aleksandar Mitrovic multiplied the benefit before Predrag Rajkovic saved a punishment from Swiss striker Breel Embolo. Serbia took a giant stride towards survival in the UEFA Nations League top-flight by securing a 2-0 victory over near rivals Switzerland - their first-ever head-to-head win. With  Serbia  and  Switzerland  essentially competing against each other to avoid relegation from Group A4, you’d have been forgiven for expecting a brighter start from two sides desperate to beat the other. It turned out to be quite the opposite though, as the only bright spot in an incredibly dull start came when  Veljko Birmancevic ’s tame effort was easily gathered by  Gregor Kobel . It took until just after the half-hour mark for the game's first big chance to arrive, but it was wasted by  Breel Embolo  who skewed wide after he was teed up by  Silvan Widmer . That ...

One and only...Michael Laudrup... 09.28.2024 news and highlights

Michael Laudrup, a former Danish national team player and player for Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid, refused to go to the European Football Championship in 1992 in protest at the expulsion of Yugoslavia, which was better in the qualifiers. Namely, Yugoslavia was first in the qualification group, and Denmark was second. He said then that neither he nor his national team deserved to replace a better team, the one that won it on the field, the country still called Yugoslavia at the time. To make the irony even greater, the Danes then won the championship by defeating Germany. When asked if he regrets not being part of the team that won the European Championship, he only briefly stated: "Senseless question, a great injustice was done to Yugoslavia."
